We asked Andy about his extensive career within the recruitment industry and what motivates him to go the extra mile for his clients
Can you tell us about your background and early career?
- As most people do, I ‘fell’ into recruitment – I had no idea what recruitment was until I started. My first role was running a very understaffed and very busy Industrial temp desk – long hours, lots of hard work, but I loved every minute of it!
What were the key milestones in your career?
- Managing my first team, managing my first branch and opening the brand new Permanent Recruitment Division for QS
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
- The thing that always comes back to me is the development of the trainee recruitment consultants I’ve had the pleasure of working with – it’s amazing to see people develop, get promoted and go on to bigger and better things. The trainee who was promoted twice in 9 months is still the highlight.
What recognition or achievements have been especially meaningful?
- My first promotion – it was recognition that all the hard work had paid off.
What skills have been most valuable throughout your career?
- Resilience – recruitment can be very… challenging, but shrugging it off and cracking on has stood me in good stead both professionally and personally.
How do you build strong professional relationships?
- There are 2 important but simple ways to do this – being honest and being yourself.
What surprised you most about your career?
- That I’d enjoy recruitment enough to still be doing it after 20 years!
What projects or opportunities excite you most?
- I love working with companies and showing them the value a good, experienced recruiter can bring to their recruitment process. I’m a consultant first and foremost, which means my role doesn’t start and end at sending CV’s – I offer advice and support on everything from recruitment timelines, to salaries, to formalising job specs, to writing offer letters.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
- Don’t over complicate things, ask lots of questions (and listen!) and use ideas from your colleagues. Also, you’ll have tough days, but remember to celebrate success, not just the big wins but all the small wins along the way!!
Whether you are looking to hire or searching for your next career move, Andy is on hand, on a strictly confidential basis, to offer advice, develop strategies and deliver solutions to suit your individual needs.
